To be eligible for Rising Stars, an attorney must be 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less.
Super Lawyers limits the list to attorneys the public can actually hire, meaning lawyers in private practice and Legal Aid attorneys. That makes it a practical resource for people who are comparing lawyers for the first time.
How Are Attorneys Selected?
Attorneys are selected through a multi-phase process that Super Lawyers runs each year in each state. The process was granted a U.S. patent in 2013 and is built around four stages.
- Nominations. Attorneys nominate lawyers they have personally seen in action, and the research team identifies additional candidates.
- Independent research. Candidates are scored on indicators such as verdicts and settlements, experience, honors, bar activity, pro bono work, and community service.
- Peer evaluation. Candidates are reviewed by practice area and grouped by firm size so the comparison stays fair.
- Final selection and verification. The top scorers are selected, and each attorney’s license and good standing are confirmed before publication.

Can Attorneys Pay to Be Selected?
No. Selection to the Rising Stars list cannot be purchased. It comes only from the nomination, research, and peer review process. Advertising and profile upgrades are sold separately after the list is published, and they have no effect on who is selected.
